The peatland wetlands of western Fennoscandia are unique in their vegetation and biodiversity. They are also renowned for their ecological significance, but local conditions often make such wetland systems challenging to study and management. We demonstrate that atmospheric temperatures are crucial for both vegetation and water chemistry, and that they provide a better basis for understanding the functioning of wetland systems than local air temperatures. Temperature-controlled short-term warming experiments were used to show that extreme conditions in a peatland swamp in Estonia could induce a substantial loss of plant and water chemistry. Temperatures within the litter were 15 °C warmer than ambient conditions, leading to substantial changes in the pH, DOC and plant community. High temperatures also caused an increase in accumulation of solutes in the peat and a corresponding loss of water. These results suggest that peatlands may function as temperature buffers in climates with extremes of temperature, and that these systems may benefit from heat treatment of permafrost to restore function.
